Scientific publishing

ISEM members produce over 300 scientific articles, 30 books and book chapters, and 20 PhD dissertation papers per year on average.
ISEM is involved in the dissemination of academic research via participation in numerous scientific journal and book publication editorial boards. The Institute pursues a proactive open science policy, ranging from data sharing to supporting journals that are cost-effective and/or associated with non-profit academic institutions. Accordingly, ISEM publishes and hosts two international peer-reviewed free open-access journals—Palaeovertebrata and MorphoMuseuM—while actively supporting the Peer Community In initiative, thereby highlighting the feasibility of generating high-quality, open-access scientific publications without reliance on professional publishers.

Palaeovertebrata

Palaeovertebrata aims to meet a critical need for easier access to research outputs within the field of vertebrate palaeontology, by providing the first “diamond open access” journal. All Palaeovertebrata articles are peer-reviewed to ensure they meet the journal’s high-quality standards. Palaeovertebrata’s primary objective is to accelerate the publication of high-quality papers and provide immediate access to its published articles at no cost to its authors or readers. We anticipate that Palaeovertebrata will gain an Impact Factor in due course.

Peer Community In

Peer Community In (PCI) is a non-profit scientific organisation that aims to create specific communities of researchers reviewing and recommending, for free, unpublished preprints in their field (i.e. unpublished articles deposited on open online archives like arXiv and bioRxiv). Since 2021, the organisation has created its journal, Peer Community Journal, funded by public research institutions and which publishes PCI-recommended articles.

DAFNEE

ISEM has launched the DAFNEE database (Database of Academia Friendly jourNals in Ecology and Evolution), which offers a list of non-profit, learned society, museum or university-associated journals relevant to ecology and evolutionary biology. The database includes generalist journals (e.g. eLife, PLoS Biol, PNAS, Science), flagship society journals (e.g. Am Nat, Heredity, JEB, Proc B, MBE, Syst Biol), Open Science initiatives (e.g. Peer Community In, MorphoMuseuM), and many high-quality journals specialised in palaeo-archaeobiology, systematics, genetics, theoretical biology, organismal biology, environmental and health sciences. To support these academia-friendly journals and contribute to a fairer scientific publishing system, DAFNEE makes this regularly updated list of journals available to scientists to promote interacting with these journals as an author, reviewer or editor.
