My activity
As an archaeologist specialised in archaeobotany, I am dedicated to exploring topics such as the past interactions between plants and human communities, ancient agricultural practices, storage strategies, and food consumption, all situated within their respective environmental, cultural, and economic contexts.
I am particularly interested in investigating the long-term history of rye in southwestern Europe, namely its evolution and dissemination. To explore this, in the frame of the BIOPOLIS project « RYSE : From weed to crop? The evolutionary journey of rye in southwestern Europe » (PI : J. Ros, ISEM, and J. Tereso, CIBIO), I am gathering diverse datasets, including precise morphological information through geometric morphometric analyses on rye remains dating up to Medieval times, and comparing them with uncharred and experimentally charred modern specimens of different rye species. The timeline of rye in the region is also being reassessed using new radiocarbon dates, while farming conditions are being examined through stable isotope analysis.
