Within the Collections facility, my role is to identify, design, or implement molecular biology techniques to enhance the value of samples from the ISEM collections. The DNA of these collection samples is generally ‘degraded’ or ‘ancient’ (e.g., sediment cores, tissues collected long ago and preserved using various conservation strategies, subfossils). Therefore, the challenge is to devise the best experimental strategies to extract genetic material in sufficient quantity and quality.
