My activity

Growing up in Costa Rica, I soon fell in love with tropical rainforests and coral reefs. After completing my undergraduate studies in biology, I went to Saudi Arabia to pursue a masters and PhD degree in marine molecular ecology. Following this, I spent 4 years in Okinawa, Japan, investigating the role of hormones in local adaptation of reef fish in French Polynesia. As a postdoctoral researcher at ISEM, I am now investigating the developmental mechanisms underlying teeth diversity in bats using advanced deep learning frameworks. My research integrates gene expression data with morphometric measurements to model the formation of different tooth classes across bat species with varied dietary adaptations. This interdisciplinary approach aims to uncover the genetic and morphological factors driving the evolution of specialized dentition in bats. By leveraging machine learning techniques, I hope to identify key developmental pathways and decision points that lead to the remarkable diversity of tooth shapes and sizes observed in chiropteran species.
